AK Steel
Safety is our highest priority at AK Steel, and we are extremely proud of our industry-leading results. In 2007, our company-wide safety performance was 12 times better than the steel industry average.

AK Steel is an active participant in numerous OSHA safety programs, and we are routinely recognized by organizations such the Ohio Bureau of Worker' Compensation division of Safety and Hygiene and the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute for our unwavering commitment to safety.

In fact, employees at our Ashland coke plant earned the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI) in 2007 for the third consecutive year. The award marks the 10th time in the past 11 years that an AK Steel coke plant received the industry's highest award for safety.

In 2000, AK Steel became the inaugural recipient of the Green Cross for Safety medal presented by the National Safety Council. This distinguished award annually recognizes a single business or organization that has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety and health and corporate citizenship.

Three AK Steel facilities have also earned the distinguished Star designation under the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The OSHA VPP Star signifies that the plants' employee safety programs go above and beyond OSHA requirements. Our Butler Works was the first steel plant in the nation to earn Star status in 2001. In 2002, our Rockport Works became the second steel plant in the country to receive the Star designation. And, in 2006, the Columbus, Indiana plant of AK Tube, a subsidiary of AK Steel, earned its VPP Star.

The Construction Users Roundtable selected AK Steel as having the best company-wide safety program. Outstanding employee efforts have resulted in many other plant safety awards including the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Safety Award, the Pennsylvania Governor's Award for Safety Excellence, the National Safety Council Award of Honor, Western Pennsylvania Safety Council Outstanding Achievement Award and various honors from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, division of Safety and Hygiene including the Group Safety Award, 100% Award, Achievement Award and Special awards.
