AK Steel Announces October Surcharges

Middletown, OH, September 17, 2004—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) has advised its flat-rolled carbon steel customers that a $157 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for products shipped in October, an increase of $15 from September’s surcharge of $142 per ton.   Also, AK Steel has advised its electrical steel customers that a $295 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for electrical steel products shipped in October, up $55 from the September surcharge of $240 per ton for those products.   The October surcharges for the broad range of stainless steel products that AK Steel produces can be found on the company’s web site at www.aksteel.com.

Consistent with AK Steel’s previously announced practice, the surcharges are based on reported prices for raw materials and energy used to manufacture the products, with the August purchase cost used to determine the October surcharges.

Headquartered in Middletown, Ohio, AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, as well as carbon and stainless tubular steel products, for automotive, appliance, construction and manufacturing markets.
