AK Steel Announces Carbon and Electrical Steel Surcharges for August

Middletown, OH, July 19, 2004—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) said today that the surcharge for its carbon steel products will be $134 per ton and the surcharge for its electrical steel products will be $105 per ton, both effective with shipments on August 1, 2004.

The surcharges have been implemented to partially offset extraordinary increases in raw material costs, particularly costs of energy and steel scrap.  Both surcharges are adjusted monthly to reflect changes in raw material costs and are based on a two-month lag in the reported prices for raw materials and energy.

Headquartered in Middletown, Ohio, AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, as well as carbon and stainless tubular steel products, for automotive, appliance, construction and manufacturing markets.
