AK Steel Carbon Steels

Hot Rolled Steels
Our Hot Rolled Steels are produced to meet the strictest chemistry and dimensional requirements, in a wide variety of grades.
Consistency from coil to coil is maintained by applying ladle metallurgy and continuous casting to molten steel, plus rolling on a modernized 86 in. wide hot strip mill that features on-line roll grinding, work-roll bending and automatic gauge control.
These technologies enable AK Steel to meet the most demanding customer specifications for hot bands, hot rolled sheet coils, cut- and mill-edge coils, plus cut lengths and custom blanks. Hydrochloric acid pickling helps produce excellent strip surfaces.

Cold Rolled Steels
Our Cold Rolled Steels provide excellent thickness and flatness tolerances, surface finish, and press formability. AK Steel manufactures low and ultra-low-carbon grades to meet a variety of customer formability requirements: CS Type B, DS Type B, EDDS, and EDDS+. AK Steel also produces HSLAS and Structural Steel grades for those applications that require specified strength levels. Cold Rolled Steels can also be specified as Dent Resistant or Bake Hardenable for applications that require dent resistance after forming and painting. Each grade can be processed with several surface finishes depending on customer requirements.

Electrogalvanized Steels
Our Electrogalvanized Steel known as ZINCGRIP® ELECTRASMOOTH® Steel offers superior surface quality, corrosion resistance, excellent formability and paintability for automotive exterior panels as well as other exposed applications where these attributes are desired. Pure zinc coatings applied to AK Steel’s quality cold rolled sheet steel deliver both galvanic and barrier protection against corrosion. Even when damaged, such coatings continue to shield the base metal by corroding preferentially to the steel substrate. ZINCGRIP ELECTRASMOOTH Steel is available in a wide variety of base metal grades and coating weights.

Hot Dip Galvanized Steels
Our Hot Dip Galvanized Steel, known as ZINCGRIP® Steel, is continuously coated on both sides with a zinc coating. The hot dip process, pioneered by AK Steel, provides a tight metallurgical bond between the steel and the coating. This process results in a material with the strength and formability of steel plus the corrosion protection of zinc. Zinc protects the base metal by providing a barrier to corrosive elements and also by the sacrificial nature of the coating. ZINCGRIP Steel is available with special surface finishes, tailored for specific applications, and in a variety of base metal grades and coating weights. ZINCGRIP Steel is widely used in many applications in the automotive, appliance, construction, HVAC, and other industries.

Hot Dip Galvannealed Steels
Our Hot Dip Galvannealed Steel, known as ZINCGRIP® GA Steel, is continuously coated on both sides with a zinc-iron alloy. Galvannealed steel is a specialized variation of galvanized steels where induction heating is used to alloy the zinc coating with the steel to create a zinc-iron coating. The hot dip process, pioneered by AK Steel, provides a tight metallurgical bond between the steel and coating. This process results in a material with the strength and formability of steel plus the corrosion protection of the zinc-iron coating. Zinc protects the base metal by providing a barrier to corrosive elements and also by the sacrificial nature of the coating. ZINCGRIP GA Steel is available with special surface finishes, tailored for specific applications, and in a variety of base metal grades and coating weights. ZINCGRIP GA Steel is widely used in many applications in automotive and general manufacturing.

Aluminized
Our Aluminized Steel Type 1 is continuously hot dip coated on both sides with an aluminum/silicon coating. The hot dip process, pioneered by AK Steel, provides a tight metallurgical bond between the steel and the coating. This process results in a material with the strength of steel plus the corrosion protection of aluminum, and the synergistic heat protection of an aluminum/ silicon alloy.

ULTRALUME® Press Hardenable Steel
ULTRALUME® Press Hardenable Steel (PHS) is a member AK Steel’s Advanced High Strength Steel portfolio. ULTRALUME PHS is a heat-treatable boron steel intended for automotive steel applications where high strength, design flexibility and crash energy management are paramount. It is continuously hot dip coated on both sides of the steel. The metallic coating is metallurgically bonded to the steel substrate and protects the steel surface against decarburization and oxidation during hot stamping. As a result, the shot blasting operation required for hot-stamped, uncoated steel parts is eliminated.
